State of the World’s Volunteering Report – 2018

Jul 31, 2018

Every two years, United Nations Volunteers (UNV) produces a State of the World’s Volunteering Report (SWVR) on a chosen theme. This year’s theme, The Thread that Binds focused on volunteerism and community resilience, ensuring communities can prevent and adapt to environmental and economic risks by creating a strong social fabric.

The report also shines a light on volunteerism as a critical resource and cross cutting means of implementing the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It estimates there are a billion volunteers worldwide, representing 109 million full time equivalent workers. If all of these people constituted a country, it would be the fifth largest in the world and exceed that of many major global industries.

The report details how volunteerism enables collective strategies for managing risk and plays a fundamental role in community resilience, especially for its vulnerable and marginalised groups.
